Cyrus thought for a minute. "I don't know. What is there to do?" |

"Well, there's a national park not far from here. I hear it's full of old dinosaur bones. I'd kind of like to see it, if you don't mind." |

|
They were nearing the exit. |
|
|
|
|

"Stick close," Kyna said. |
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
Cyrus noticed for the first time that she was carrying a large paper tote bag in the hand opposite the briefcase. |

|
|
|
|
|
|
|
"What did you think about the Temple?" Kyna asked as they stepped out onto the sidewalk. The wind had picked up and a quarter moon hung like a half-closed eye above the juniper trees to the east. Fall was in the air, crisp with a foretaste of snow. |
|

|
|
|
|
|
"You came back awfully fast." |
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
As they walked back to the car, Kyna turned the collar of her jacket up. The chill wind seemed to have sent everyone scurrying for home and hearth and their footsteps echoed like blows from a rock climber's hammer down the canyon of man-made mountains. |

"What do you like?" she asked. |

"Oh, working with my handsbuilding things. Target shooting. Karate." |

|

Kyna adjusted the back of her collar. The necklace seemed to be rubbing her the wrong way. "How did you get into that stuff?" |

He was quiet so long that she finally said, "So don't tell me." |

"No, it's just . . ." Cyrus took a deep breath. He never confided anything personal to any of his clientsuntil now. "My mom and dad were killed by muggers." |
